Review: NARS Pro-Prime Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base

Eyeshadow primer is one type of product which I really cannot find in Japan. I always stock up when I am in the US.  I like UDPP, and my drugstore go-to is the Milani eyeshadow primer.  I got a sample of the NARS Pro-Prime Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base, and I was really excited to try it.

What it does: (from the Sephora website)

A lightweight primer that creates a seamless canvas that keeps cream and powder eye color looking brilliant, fresh, and just-applied all day. This smudge-proof eyeshadow base uses a unique polymer and mineral powder blend to get a firm grip on color for long-lasting, gorgeous wear. Fortified with a special deep-sea extract and an antioxidant rice extract, it dries on contact and keeps the delicate eye lid smooth and ready for eyeshadow application.

Price: $26 for 7ml.  By comparison, the Urban Decay Primer Potion is $20 for 10ml

Availability: NARS is available at Sephora and select department stores in the US.

What I thought:

When I first touched the tube, I thought it was very similar to other NARS products with a rough silicone finish. I was concerned that it would get pretty dirty quickly, and I was right!

I opened the top to find a small doe foot applicator. It is very stiff, and effective in applying a tiny bit of primer to my eyelids.

The product is smooth and did not leave any kind of residue on my skin. I was pleasantly surprised to see how well the primer worked to keep my eyeshadow in place, even in the summer.

Would I repurchase? Yes, I thought this worked very well!

Review: Kao Sofina Prima Vista primer

This is a review of the Kao Sofina Prima Vista primer.  Apparently, it is the top rated makeup primer of Japan!

What it does:

This is a liquidy primer with a light pink color, which claims to control oil and shine, and keep foundation on for longer.

Price: This product retails for 3000 JPY (about $26) for 25 ml.

Availability: This product is widely available at drugstores in Japan. Ever since this product started winning beauty awards 2-3 years ago, it has become available in just about every drugstore that sells Kao products.

What I thought:

This is one of the few oil-controlling primers which actually work for me! I don’t know how it works, but it did a good job at keeping my foundation on even in the hot, humid summer.  It also works well now that the dry, cold weather has come, and keeps my makeup on without drying out my skin. Since my skin is oily in my T-zone and around my nose, I like to apply it only to those places.

I was also amazed at how long this product lasted for me. I bought this in early summer and just recently finished the bottle. Considering how small the bottle is, I was really surprised!

Would I repurchase? Yes!

There is a very similar product available online called Sofina Prima Vista Ange primer, which is nearly half price of this product. This is a line from Sofina which is only available in Taiwan. According to Japanese beauty bloggers, the two products are extremely similar. However the Ange primer is white, and looks different on the initial application.

Review: Skindinavia Makeup Primer Spray

This is a review of the Skindinavia Makeup Primer Spray.

A while ago, the setting spray from Skindinavia was extremely hyped on beauty blogs. Apparently, Skindinavia also produces the Urban Decay All-Nighter spray, so many people wanted to compare the two. I bought the primer spray together with the setting spray from Skindinavia’s website.
Skindinavia primer spray

What it does: (from the Skindinavia website)
Pore-clogging silicone primers have no place on your face! Get perfect makeup now and a virtually poreless, more even-toned complexion later. Our lightweight, silicone-free primer mist delivers a smooth canvas for impeccable, long-wear makeup application, and offers long-term skin benefits you’ll love as well!

Price: this product is available in 2 sizes: $35 for 4 oz, or $49 for 8 oz

Availability: This product is available on the Skindinavia website. Skindinavia also ships worldwide.

Pros:

  • This product did a decent job of helping my makeup last all day
  • After I applied this product and let it dry, my skin did not feel sticky like some long-wear primers
  • Skindinavia regularly has some kind of promotion going on, such as free shipping or an extra trial size of product

Cons:

  • Since this product is a liquid that sprays out, I had to wait for it to dry before applying my foundation. I prefer setting sprays so that I can do something else while the product dries
  • This product is not sweat proof, so this product was not effective during the hot days of summer

Would I repurchase? Maybe. I like how this product makes my makeup last, but it does not work in the summer when I need the most long lasting makeup.

Hope you enjoyed my review!

Review: Skindinavia The Makeup Finishing Spray

It’s summer, which means that my number one focus is how to keep my makeup on my face. Between the heat and humidity in Japan, sometimes my makeup melts off within a few hours!

I found out about the Skindinavia makeup setting spray online. Skindinavia products are available through their website and they ship abroad!

What it does: (from the Skindinavia website)

The original authority on makeup finishing sprays, Skindinavia is the definitive go-to when you want your makeup to have that on-going ‘just-applied’ look! Clinically-proven to keep colors vibrant and make creasing concealer and faded foundation a thing of the past, consider this your barrier against makeup meltdown. Applies as a lightweight, breathable mist to set liquid and powder makeup and holds your makeup in place for up to 16 hours.

Price: $39 for 8 oz

Availability: Skindinavia products are available through their website.

Pros:

  • My foundation lasts longer on my face compared to when I apply this spray
  • The spray is very fine

Cons:

  • This product helps my foundation last against the oils in my skin, but it doesn’t help so much against sweat.

Would I repurchase?  Yes.

If your skin produces more oil in the summer, this product can help your foundation last longer. However, if your foundation melts off because of sweat, this product does not really help your foundation become waterproof.  I still find that when I blot the sweat off of my face, foundation comes off.  I’m still looking for a product which will protect my foundation against sweat!

Review: Milani eyeshadow primer

Eyeshadow primer is one product that I always pick up when I am in the US. There doesn’t seem to be a product in Japan which claims to keep your eyeshadow from creasing. Considering that most Japanese people have what you would consider hooded eyelids, I would think there would be a need in the market for one.

My go-to eyeshadow primer is the Urban Decay Primer Potion. Ever since it was repackaged to a squeeze tube, I have really enjoyed using it. However, it is a little bit too creamy for me since I have oily eyelids.  I have tried other primers as well, such as the L’Oreal De-Crease, but it too was too creamy for me.

Since I have such little faith in new eyeshadow primers, I am not sure why I picked up the Milani Eyeshadow Primer, but I am glad I did!  To share the conclusion first – I loved this, even more than the UDPP!

What it does: (from the Milani website)
Maybe we’re biased, but this is the best eye shadow primer out there, bar none. Why is it so incredible? For starters, how about the 8-plus hours of performance it delivers? Or the fact that it turns every shadow – regardless of formula – into longwear? This lightweight, nonsticky color-intensifier and crease-minimizer goes on nude and once it dries down, it’s invisible. You’ll know it’s there, though. And so will your shadow.

Price: Will vary, depending on where you buy it.  Milani’s website lists this product for $6 for 0.3 oz. Compare that with UDPP’s $12 for 0.2 oz!  This product is 1/3 of the cost per weight!

Availability: Milani products are available in US drugstores, and at Milani’s website.

Pros:

  • This is a thicker product than the UDPP, which works better on my oily eyelids.
  • This product makes my eyeshadow last longer and crease less than UDPP.
  • It is WAYYY cheaper. The tube looks smaller than UDPP, but apparently it isn’t.

Cons:

  • Milani is harder to find than some other US drugstore brands, and I had an especially hard time finding this product.

Would I repurchase? YES, and I’m sorry that I didn’t buy another one!

If you have oily eyelids like me, definitely try this out!
