Empties from April – August 2017

It’s been such a strange summer here in Japan.  Everyone was expecting it to be a super hot summer, and while July was really hot, it rained for 22 days straight in August.  Still, I used a lot of summer products to deal with the humidity.  Here is a look back at my empties in the recent months!

Make Up For Ever Mat Velvet + Foundation (link goes to my review)

I really wish every company put their foundation in a container like this. It is a small plastic container with a squeeze tube. It’s super easy to carry around, I can dispense foundation easily, and I don’t need to worry about any spillage!

Revlon Photoready Skinlights Face Illuminator in Bare Lights (link goes to my review)

I feel like this was one of the first liquid highlighting products at the drugstore. I really enjoyed how versatile it was!

Skinfood Peach Sake Silky Finish Powder (link goes to my review)

This is a silica powder with a peach fragrance.  It is a great powder, but buying silica powder in bulk will do the same thing. I used to be able to find silica powder online easily, but I can’t seem to find it anymore!

Milani Eyeshadow Primer (link goes to my review)

This is a great, great primer at a wonderful price!  It is a must have in my collection!

Beauty Make-up Sponge (set of 20)

I always enjoyed using the Beauty Blender, but it isn’t easy to buy in Japan. I have gone back to using disposable sponges!

Bath and Body Works Aloha Waterfall Orchid shower gel

This was the last of my Bath and Body Works collection! I hope I can get more when I visit the US.

Sephora Daily Brush Cleanser (link goes to my review)

I’d never used brush cleansers before, but I picked this up on a whim at Sephora. It cleans my brushes well and doesn’t leave a scent.

Rohto Skin Aqua Super Moisture Essence SPF 50+ PA++++

This is my go-to SPF for my body. I like that it absorbs well into my skin and doesn’t leave it sticky.

Nivea Sun Protect Plus UV Milky Essence SPF50+ PA++++

This is my other favorite SPF for my body. It is a bit thicker than the Rhoto one, and I like using it when I’m outdoors.

Nivea Sun Protect Water Gel SPF 50+ PA++++

This is my go-to SPF for my face. It’s light and absorbs well, but it contains alcohol.

Hope you enjoyed my empties!

Empties from September – October 2016

I realize it is no longer October… but I wrote a draft post 2 months ago, and I don’t feel like updating it with all the empties from November!

Here is a look at the products I used up in the past 2 months.

Jordana 12 Hour Made To Last Liquid Eyeliner Pencil

I’ve repurchased this pencil several times, so I’m surprised that I never wrote a review for it. It is very affordable and very creamy. I like my eyeliner to be dark brown rather than black, since black just seems to make my eyes look very harsh.

Maybelline lipstick

I think I bought this 4 years ago… I continued to use it since it didn’t smell off, but the shade name has rubbed off, so I have no idea what this product is called!

img_8107

Skindinavia The Makeup Finishing Spray (link goes to my review)

Apparently this is the same product as the Urban Decay setting spray. I like that Skindinavia ships abroad!  I recommend that you wait for a sale – there are always sale codes around so it doesn’t make sense to pay full price.

img_8119

MKB cleansing oil

This is an off brand product from Matsumoto Kiyoshi, a Japanese drugstore. I originally picked this up because it was significantly cheaper than brand name cleansing oils. Surprisingly, I like this much better than other oils, and I have repurchased this several times.

img_8398

Biore Baking Soda Cleansing Scrub (link goes to my review)

I bought this product when I went to New York this spring because there were advertisements EVERYWHERE.  I liked it… but I didn’t like that it did not rinse off cleanly.

img_8401

Seabreeze Deo + Water deodorant (link goes to my review)

I have repurchased this so many times. I refill a small spray bottle with this product because the original packaging is just not easy to use.
img_8122

Gatsby Ice Deodorant Body Paper Ice Citrus (link goes to my review)

This is another must have for the summer. This is the strongest body wipe that I’ve found, and the cooling sensation lasts for some time.

img_8403

Bath and Body Works body lotion in Honolulu Sun

This was not a memorable body lotion for me. In the winter, I try not to use fragranced body lotions as the perfume irritates my skin.

img_8134

Rohto Z! eye drops

These were the STRONGEST eye drops on the market… until Rohto came out with an even stronger version.

Products I’ve Repurchased – Skin, Hair, and Body

The market is flooded with new products all the time, but which products have stood the test of time? I’m always interested to see what products people have repurchased, because those are the real favorites.   Surprisingly, the last time I did a blog post on items I repurchased was way back in 2011!

In this post, I will share the skin care and hair products which I have repurchased.

If you are interested to see what I repurchased in 2011, here are links to the old posts:

Skin products

Face wash net (link goes to my review)

I always, always use a face wash net when washing my face. It creates a rich, creamy lather. These are available at Daiso and other 100 yen stores, and I’ve repurchased them countless times.

Cotton Labo Mekuru Cotton Large Size (link goes to my review)

This cotton sheet is made up of 5 thin layers, so that they can be split to make lotion masks. I like this brand so much that I bought tons of backups when I lived abroad.

MKB Cleansing Oil

This is a store brand cleansing oil from Matsumoto Kiyoshi (a drugstore chain in Japan), and it is surprisingly good. It rinses clean, doesn’t have a strong scent, and dissolves makeup well.

Rohto Hadalabo Gokujun hyaluronic acid essence (link goes to my review)

This is a well-loved essence which I have repurchased countless times. It moisturizes well and is very affordable!

Lush Brazen Honey Fresh Face Mask (link goes to my review)

This is still my favorite mask from Lush, which I use to pamper my skin. Fresh Face Masks go bad pretty quickly, so I suggest freezing them if you can’t use them up.

Hair products

Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray (link goes to my review)

Ever since I cut my hair, I have been loving salt sprays to add texture. The Bumble and Bumble one is still my favorite.

Lush Sea Spray  (link goes to my review)

Since I can’t buy the Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray in Japan, I like to buy the Lush Sea Spray.

IMG_6725

Body products

Nivea Sun Protect Water Gel

This has been my go-to sunscreen, both for my body and for my face. I like that it dries down quickly and doesn’t leave a residue on my skin.

IMG_7455

Seabreeze Deo+Water deodorant (link goes to my review)

This has been my go-to deodorant for a very, very long time. It is hard to find antiperspirants in Japan, so I stick with deodorants.

Shirt Cool (link goes to my review)

A favorites post in the summer time always includes a mention about Shirt Cool. This is a menthol spray that you apply to your clothes, and it keeps you feeling cool for about 30 minutes.  It is a lifesaver in the hot, humid summers!

Gatsby Ice Deodorant Body Paper Ice Citrus (link goes to my review)

I go through about a pack and a half every summer. Although there are several brands which sell cooling wipes, I found that the Gatsby Ice Deodorant one has the strongest cooling sensation. I also usually have a smaller package to keep in my purse.

Gatsby body paper

Bath and Body Works Twilight Woods (link goes to my review)

I like Bath and Body Works products a lot, and I tend to buy a few every time I’m in the US. With so many new scents coming out all the time, there are very few that I have repurchased.  The Twilight Woods scent is one of the few that I have bought multiple times.

IMG_4638_final

Bath and Body Works Aromatherapy Energy Orange Ginger (link goes to my review)

This is the other Bath and Body Works scent that I have repurchased. It is fresh and  energizing!

IMG_3728_final

Wow, I’m surprised to see that there are some products that I’ve never reviewed, even though I’ve bought them multiple times.  Looks like I have some reviews to write!

Empties for September and October 2015

Wow, I used up a lot of products in the past few months. I usually go for months and months without doing empties posts, but I just did one 2 months ago!

Revlon Colorstay Liquid Foundation for Oily/Combination Skin

This was the first liquid foundation I bought (obviously not the same bottle!) and I keep going back to it. It is sold in Japan with a pump, but the price is more than twice the price in the US!

IMG_7179

NARS Satin Lip Pencil in Rikugien (link goes to my review)

This was part of the birthday gift from Sephora. Although it was not a full sized product, it was enough to last for a long time! I wish all brands sold lipsticks in smaller amounts than they do today.

IMG_7086

Jordana Color Tint Blush Stick in Blushed (link goes to my review)

I bought this in New York 1.5 years ago, and I can’t tell you how many times it has made it into my favorites since then. I loved this product so much! If you are interested in trying out a cream blush, this is the one I recommend, especially since the price is so affordable!

IMG_7088

Martha Tilaar Caring Colours Everlast BB Cream (link goes to my review)

This is a local Indonesian product that I bought when I lived there. Although it didn’t have heavy coverage, somehow it managed to make my skin look better. I really enjoyed using this product in the summer.

IMG_7048

Nivea Sun Protect Water Gel SPF 50 PA+++

During the summer, I go through tons of sunscreen!

IMG_7070

Noevir Cleansing Crystals (link goes to my review)

This was a powdered facial cleanser that did a fairly good job of promoting cell turnover. However, this is quite a pricy product, and there are other facial cleansers that work well at a lower price.

IMG_7039

Kose Softymo blotting sheets

Not my favorite blotting sheets but they got the job done. I’m glad I am through with these!

IMG_7195

Bath and Body Works Aromatherapy Energy Orange Ginger shower gel (link goes to my review)

This is probably my favorite scent from Bath and Body Works!

IMG_7036

Gatsby Ice Deodorant Body Papers (link goes to my review)

These are a must have for me in the summer. I even kept one package at home, one package at work, and had a travel pack to carry around in my bag!

IMG_7177

Rohto Z! eye drops

Who remembers when these were all the rage on the beauty community? These eye drops deliver MASSIVE menthol coolness, and are not for the light hearted!  Actually, Rohto has come out with an even stronger line recently!

Hope you enjoyed my empties!

Review: Rohto Shirocha Sengan Facial Cleanser – makes fabulous lather

(Purchased product)

Although I used to religiously purchase facial cleansers, I stopped buying them while I was in China. However, this product caught my eye the last time I was in Japan.

This is a review of the Rohto Shirocha Sengan facial cleanser (白茶洗顔). “Shirocha” is Japanese for white tea. “Sengan” means “to wash your face”. This product is available in a tube, as a solid soap, and as a mousse. The mousse form is in a can, similar to a bottle of hair mousse. Rohto is a major Japanese brand,  mostly famous in the beauty blogger community for eye drops.

This product is supposed to brighten your complexion by increasing cell turnover. The commercials also talk a lot about how much this product foams up, creating mounds of creamy lather.

(The picture makes the tube look almost white, but it is actually light green)

What it does: (from Rohto’s website)
We created a product with creamy lather to gently surround your skin. It is easy to make thick, creamy lather with this product. The firm lather will wash off old skin cells and dirt, without leaving skin feeling tight. Although this product is thick and creamy when washing, it will rinse clean.

Where to purchase: This product is widely available at Japanese drugstores.

Price: Retails for 525 JPY (around $5)

Scent: This product smells faintly of green tea

Pros:

  • I LOVE LOVE LOVE how easy it is to create lather with this product. As usual, I use a face wash net to make the lather quickly and easily.
  • The lather is really thick and creamy! It felt like I was washing my face with whipped cream.
  • Because this product makes lather easily, I can use very little product each time. I probably use less than half the amount I use with other facial cleansers
  • I love that I can rinse this product off of my face easily, and it does not leave a film or residue on my face

Cons:

  • Despite the claims, this does leave my skin feeling slightly tight. This can be counteracted by moisturizing quickly.

Would I repurchase? Yes, I liked how much lather I could create!

The Rohto website shows that you can do a “mousse facial mask” with the mousse version of this product. I’m not clear on why I couldn’t do the same with this product. But be careful – leaving cleanser on your skin, or massaging with it, will increase the cleansing properties. It could make your skin dry out. This is different from the bubble face mask I reviewed before, since that product was not a cleanser.

Hope you enjoyed this review!
