Favorites from 2016

Don’t you love seeing what people liked for the entire year?  Here are my favorite products from 2016.

If you are interested in seeing my past favorites, I have done an annual roundup for 201520142013201220112010, and 2009.

All links go to my reviews.

Best foundation:  Cover FX Custom Color Drops

This summer, I spent a lot of time diving. Because of this, many of my foundations were too light for me! Since I didn’t want to purchase a new foundation, I bought the Cover FX Custom Color Drops in  N70.  This is the shade “for medium to deeply tanned skin with neutral undertones”, and it worked out great to adjust my foundations.

Best face primer: Kao Sephora Prima Vista primer

It’s been a long time since a Japanese product excited me this much! This primer has been winning a lot of Japanese beauty awards since it was launched. I finally bit the bullet to purchase it, and it definitely makes my foundation stay on longer in the summer.

Best eyeshadow: Morphe 12S Soul of Summer eyeshadow palette

Ahh I wish I had been able to buy more Morphe stuff! This is a great eyeshadow palette with lots of every day neutral colors.  Even the blue-gray color in the right hand side works great on my eyes.

Best eyeshadow primer: Milani eyeshadow primer

I love how it keeps my eyeshadow from creasing.  I love the price, and I love that it is in a squeeze tube.  Definitely, this is the best eyeshadow primer at the drugstore!

Best makeup remover: MKB Aqua Cleansing oil

Surprisingly, this is a store brand product from Matsumoto Kiyoshi, a major Japanese drugstore chain. It is one of the cheapest cleaning oils available, and yet it takes off all of my eye makeup easily.

Best new skin care product: Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Alpha Beta Universal Daily Peel

I bought this on a suggestion from a fellow blogger. This is such a great chemical peel and definitely worth the price tag.  My skin feels smoother and looks better every time I use it.

Best fragrance: Jo Malone Wood Sage and Sea Salt Cologne

Ah, if only Jo Malone perfumes were more affordable… This is such a wonderful scent which is feminine without being sweet or fruity.

Best hair product: Not Your Mother’s Beach Babe Texturizing Sea Salt Spray

Another year, another salt spray. Salt sprays are my go to styling product in the summer months. This year, I finally found a product from the drugstore which works! I also love how this smells.

What were your favorite products of 2016?

Empties from September – October 2016

I realize it is no longer October… but I wrote a draft post 2 months ago, and I don’t feel like updating it with all the empties from November!

Here is a look at the products I used up in the past 2 months.

Jordana 12 Hour Made To Last Liquid Eyeliner Pencil

I’ve repurchased this pencil several times, so I’m surprised that I never wrote a review for it. It is very affordable and very creamy. I like my eyeliner to be dark brown rather than black, since black just seems to make my eyes look very harsh.

Maybelline lipstick

I think I bought this 4 years ago… I continued to use it since it didn’t smell off, but the shade name has rubbed off, so I have no idea what this product is called!

img_8107

Skindinavia The Makeup Finishing Spray (link goes to my review)

Apparently this is the same product as the Urban Decay setting spray. I like that Skindinavia ships abroad!  I recommend that you wait for a sale – there are always sale codes around so it doesn’t make sense to pay full price.

img_8119

MKB cleansing oil

This is an off brand product from Matsumoto Kiyoshi, a Japanese drugstore. I originally picked this up because it was significantly cheaper than brand name cleansing oils. Surprisingly, I like this much better than other oils, and I have repurchased this several times.

img_8398

Biore Baking Soda Cleansing Scrub (link goes to my review)

I bought this product when I went to New York this spring because there were advertisements EVERYWHERE.  I liked it… but I didn’t like that it did not rinse off cleanly.

img_8401

Seabreeze Deo + Water deodorant (link goes to my review)

I have repurchased this so many times. I refill a small spray bottle with this product because the original packaging is just not easy to use.
img_8122

Gatsby Ice Deodorant Body Paper Ice Citrus (link goes to my review)

This is another must have for the summer. This is the strongest body wipe that I’ve found, and the cooling sensation lasts for some time.

img_8403

Bath and Body Works body lotion in Honolulu Sun

This was not a memorable body lotion for me. In the winter, I try not to use fragranced body lotions as the perfume irritates my skin.

img_8134

Rohto Z! eye drops

These were the STRONGEST eye drops on the market… until Rohto came out with an even stronger version.

Review: MKB Aqua Cleansing Oil

Although I don’t always care about whether a product is brand name or not, it is rare that I prefer the store brand version more than a brand name product. However, I really like the MKB Aqua Cleansing Oil so much that I have mentioned it several times in past favorites videos!

IMG_7969

MKB is the store brand line from Matsumoto Kiyoshi, a major drugstore chain in Japan. MatsuKiyo, as it is locally known, is easy to find in many large cities due to its distinctive yellow store front.

(picture from Wikipedia)

What it does: (from Matsumoto Kiyoshi)

Not heavy or oily. Removes even mascara thoroughly. Can be used in the shower.

Price: 615 JPY (about $6) / 250 ml. The bottle is about the same size as other cleansing oils.

Availability: This product is available at the more than 700 MatsuKiyo stores throughout Japan, as well as on MatsuKiyo’s website.

What I thought:

I originally bought this because it is much cheaper than brand name oil cleansers. I really like this product, so much so that I have not been buying any other oil cleanser for a while!

The product comes with a pump, and I typically use 1 pump for my entire face. The oil is a bit thicker than other brands, but I feel that this makes it easier to apply to my face without the product dripping. It removes makeup quite well, but I found that I needed to be a little bit more thorough when I used waterproof mascara.

I also use this to clean my makeup brushes, because it rinses clean without any residue.

Would I repurchase? Yes!

Hope you enjoyed this review!

Products I’ve Repurchased – Skin, Hair, and Body

The market is flooded with new products all the time, but which products have stood the test of time? I’m always interested to see what products people have repurchased, because those are the real favorites.   Surprisingly, the last time I did a blog post on items I repurchased was way back in 2011!

In this post, I will share the skin care and hair products which I have repurchased.

If you are interested to see what I repurchased in 2011, here are links to the old posts:

Skin products

Face wash net (link goes to my review)

I always, always use a face wash net when washing my face. It creates a rich, creamy lather. These are available at Daiso and other 100 yen stores, and I’ve repurchased them countless times.

Cotton Labo Mekuru Cotton Large Size (link goes to my review)

This cotton sheet is made up of 5 thin layers, so that they can be split to make lotion masks. I like this brand so much that I bought tons of backups when I lived abroad.

MKB Cleansing Oil

This is a store brand cleansing oil from Matsumoto Kiyoshi (a drugstore chain in Japan), and it is surprisingly good. It rinses clean, doesn’t have a strong scent, and dissolves makeup well.

Rohto Hadalabo Gokujun hyaluronic acid essence (link goes to my review)

This is a well-loved essence which I have repurchased countless times. It moisturizes well and is very affordable!

Lush Brazen Honey Fresh Face Mask (link goes to my review)

This is still my favorite mask from Lush, which I use to pamper my skin. Fresh Face Masks go bad pretty quickly, so I suggest freezing them if you can’t use them up.

Hair products

Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray (link goes to my review)

Ever since I cut my hair, I have been loving salt sprays to add texture. The Bumble and Bumble one is still my favorite.

Lush Sea Spray  (link goes to my review)

Since I can’t buy the Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray in Japan, I like to buy the Lush Sea Spray.

IMG_6725

Body products

Nivea Sun Protect Water Gel

This has been my go-to sunscreen, both for my body and for my face. I like that it dries down quickly and doesn’t leave a residue on my skin.

IMG_7455

Seabreeze Deo+Water deodorant (link goes to my review)

This has been my go-to deodorant for a very, very long time. It is hard to find antiperspirants in Japan, so I stick with deodorants.

Shirt Cool (link goes to my review)

A favorites post in the summer time always includes a mention about Shirt Cool. This is a menthol spray that you apply to your clothes, and it keeps you feeling cool for about 30 minutes.  It is a lifesaver in the hot, humid summers!

Gatsby Ice Deodorant Body Paper Ice Citrus (link goes to my review)

I go through about a pack and a half every summer. Although there are several brands which sell cooling wipes, I found that the Gatsby Ice Deodorant one has the strongest cooling sensation. I also usually have a smaller package to keep in my purse.

Bath and Body Works Twilight Woods (link goes to my review)

I like Bath and Body Works products a lot, and I tend to buy a few every time I’m in the US. With so many new scents coming out all the time, there are very few that I have repurchased.  The Twilight Woods scent is one of the few that I have bought multiple times.

IMG_4638_final

Bath and Body Works Aromatherapy Energy Orange Ginger (link goes to my review)

This is the other Bath and Body Works scent that I have repurchased. It is fresh and  energizing!

IMG_3728_final

Wow, I’m surprised to see that there are some products that I’ve never reviewed, even though I’ve bought them multiple times.  Looks like I have some reviews to write!

Empties from June and July 2016

Here are my empties from June and July.  This month, I made some great progress!

(all links go to my reviews)

L’Oreal True Match Super Blendable Makeup (link goes to my review)

I bought this foundation after reading several positive reviews online. This product blended very well and made my skin look great.  However, it is extremely liquidy, so I recommend putting it into a pump.

IMG_7990

Urban Decay Primer Potion (link goes to my review)

Wow, I used up a UDPP! I wish they still came in squeeze tubes like this one. Currently, I’m using the Milani eyeshadow primer, which is very affordable and works well for my oily eyelids.

Bibo Eyeful Eyebrow Pencil in Light Brown

Because most Japanese people naturally have dark hair, it is hard to find eyebrow products for lighter hair. I have been using this light brown eyebrow pencil for a long time.

IMG_7982

Escada Turquoise Summer Eau de Toilette (link goes to my review)

This is a berry-scented eau de toilette, and a very interesting scent for early summer.

IMG_8051

Chloe Eau de Parfum (link goes to my review)

This is a sweet, floral scent, which I enjoyed using in the spring.

IMG_7983

MKB cleansing oil

I seem to be using one of these every 2 months. Although it is a store-brand product from Matsumoto Kiyoshi (a major drugstore in Japan), I like it better than other cleansing oils.

IMG_8048

Curel Ultra Healing Intensive Lotion

This is a very rich moisturizing cream for the body.

IMG_7979

Nivea Sun Protect Water Gel

This is my go-to facial SPF.  I like it because it does not make my skin greasy. However, this product has alcohol in it, so some people may not like using it on their face.

IMG_8050

Biore UV Perfect Milk sunscreen (link goes to my review)

This used to be my go-to sunscreen for the body.  It is a little greasy, so I like it better in the cooler months.

Kose Sun Cut Sunscreen Gel SPF 50 Waterproof

I really did not like this sunscreen. Although it is called a gel, I felt it was very thick. It also left a white cast on my skin.
