Empties from November 2015 to February 2016 – Part 1

Here are some of my emptiness from November 2015 to February 2016. I’m always surprised at how many empties people have each month.  I struggle to use up even a whole bottle of shower gel!

(all links go to reviews I have done before)

Milani Shadow Eyez in Champagne Toast

I recommend these eyeshadow pencils so much. They look great by themselves or as a base, and they don’t crease!

YSL Le Teint Encre De Peau foundation

I never did a review on this foundation because when I got it, it was already discontinued. I did not like the applicator, but this gave my skin a nice even finish without looking too cakey.

Skinfood Buckwheat loose powder

I completely forgot about this product until I realized it was taking up a lot of space in my makeup drawer.  It is a finely milled powder that I can apply on top of my makeup without looking too unnatural.

Rimmel Stay Matte pressed powder

While I liked the product itself, I did not like the packaging. The plastic top will crack if you keep the product where it can get squeezed.

Bath and Body Works Aromatherapy Orange Ginger shower gel

This is still one of my favorite scents from Bath and Body Works. If you are looking for a shower gel which isn’t too floral or fruity, take a look at this one.

Bath and Body Works Aromatherapy Lavender Vanilla shower gel

This is another one of my favorites from Bath and Body Works. It is a change to have a vanilla scented product which isn’t very sweet.

Stay tuned for part 2 of my empties!

Favorites from 2015

I’m a little late to the game, but here are my favorite products from 2015!

If you are interested in seeing my past favorites, I have done an annual roundup for 201420132012,2011, 2010, and 2009.

All links go to my reviews.

Best foundation: L’Oreal True Match Super Blendable Makeup

I picked this up because of all the great reviews online. I love how the finish looks very natural!

L'Oreal True Match Super Blendable Makeup
I really do not like the packaging, though, so I put it in an airless pump bottle that I got at Daiso (a Japanese dollar store).  This is another great find and I have been putting all of my foundations into these pump bottles.

Best high end mascara: Tarte Lights Camera Action mascara
Wow, I never thought I would find a high end mascara that I thought was worth the price. This mascara made it look like I had more eyelashes than I actually did.

Tarte Lights Camera Lashes

Best drugstore mascara: Maybelline Volum’ Express Pumped Up! Colossal mascara

This mascara delivered on all the things I need – fuller lashes, good separation, and no transferring under my eyes. I even tested this during the summer, and it lasted throughout the humidity!

Maybelline Volum' Express Pumped Up! Colossal mascara

Best eyeshadow: Barry M Dazzle Dust in Rose Gold

I found out this past year that I look good in rose gold! I loved this eyeshadow and I went through an entire pan!

Best makeup product that I never thought of: Daiso Eyeliner coat

This is a liquid that you put on top of your eyeliner to prevent it from transferring. It has been life changing for me! Previously, I could never wear eyeliner on my lower lash line without having it transfer or disappear within a few hours. With this product, my eyeliner lasts and lasts.  I have never seen a similar product from any other brand!

Best eyeshadow primer: Milani eyeshadow primer

This is definitely the best eyeshadow primer out there. Most other eyeshadow primers are too oily for my lids, but this one makes my eyeshadow last all day. I also love that it is in a squeeze tube, and that it is so affordable.

Best high end lipstick: Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Natural N9

This product was from the 2014 Sephora birthday gift, and I found that it really worked great for my lips. The color gave my lips a natural flush, and unlike most lipsticks, it did not make my lips peel.

Best drugstore lipstick: Revlon Lip Butter in Pink Truffle

This lipstick gives my lips a slight tint – which is just the thing I wanted when I did a more dramatic eye look.

Best Perfume: Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess Eau Fraiche

This is a limited edition fragrance that comes out every summer. I finally got my hands on it, thanks to a good friend. The scent reminds me of vacations in the tropics.

Best new hair tool: Sparkly Soul Headbands

2015 was the year when I started running outside.  A good friend suggested these headbands when I was looking for something to keep my hair out of my face. They really do not move!

Favorite hair product: Lush Sea Spray

After cutting my hair shorter at the end of 2014, I have been enjoying salt sprays for my hair to give it a carefree, tousled look. Salt sprays are a little difficult to find in Japan, but I have had good luck with this one from Lush.

Favorite new makeup tool (tie):

Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge

I bought this product solely for the purpose of reviewing it – and I fully intended to say that the original Beauty Blender was much better. However, I found that I am really loving this! The flat surface makes blending foundation easier than with a round surface, and the softness is the same as the original Beauty Blender.  What a steal at $10!

Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge

Elf Small Stipple Brush

I bought this brush because it was so liked on Youtube, and I found that it works great for cream blushes. Unfortunately, I quickly destroyed my first brush, so thankfully a friend helped me to buy a new one!

Real Techniques Blush Brush

In general, I have better luck with eye brushes than with face brushes. For some reason, it is hard for me to find a blush brush that works for me, in terms of color placement, blending, and how it feels on my skin. A friend recommended me this brush, and I really love it!

Favorite new body product: Lush Love Soap

I bought this to support same sex marriage, just after the landmark decision in the US. The soap turned out to be fabulous – a great scent and great lather. I wish it were permanent!

Hope you enjoyed my 2015 favorites!

Monthly Favorites #59: November, 2015

Fall/winter fashion is such a difficult thing for me. I can’t wear wool because it causes rashes, so big chunky sweaters are completely out. I can’t wear turtlenecks and I strongly prefer 3/4 length sleeves. I go shopping every winter looking for something interesting, but I always end up  lost!

On to my favorites!

Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge

Many dupes of the Beauty Blender sponge have come out, but I usually prefer the original because it is softer. In this case, I found that the Real Techniques sponge is as soft and bouncy as the Beauty Blender. In fact, the flat side makes it even easier to apply and blend foundation!

YSL Le Teint Encre De Peau foundation

It looks like this foundation has been discontinued in the US. It feels very light on the skin but the coverage is really good!

Milani Shadow Eyez in Sand Dunes (link goes to my review)

I also mentioned this product last month, and I am still enjoying using this as an eyeshadow base. It really doesn’t crease throughout the day!

Milani Shadow Eyez

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush

I have a love-hate relationship with this blush. I love how it looks on my skin, but I hate how it looks completely different in the pan versus on my skin. For example, see the mauve tone at the end of the palette? It’s called Mood Exposure, and while it looks plummy in the pan, it looks bright pink on my skin!

Using essence / lotion as a daily face mask (link goes to a previous post)

This is a very common skin care technique in Japan. I tend to skip doing it in the summer, but as the weather gets colder, I have been putting more moisturizing products on my skin.

Monthly Favorites #58: October, 2015

September was a crazy month for me. I have been constantly tired – which is a big watch out for me, since it usually means that I am starting to get depressed. My eating habits have also been totally out of whack as well.

Things have been so complicated at work, and I guess I need something new.  I’ve been at my current assignment for 2 years, and I am beginning to be tired of it. I hope things look up for me soon!

On to my favorites!

Lush Rockstar Soap

I picked up this soap at Lush recently. I have been loving the fruity scent and the pink color.  A review is coming up soon!

Lush Rockstar Soap

Tarte Lights Camera Action mascara

This is a sample size that I received somewhere. I am not a big fan of high end mascaras, but I loved how this mascara looked on my lashes. Was it enough for me to repurchase it? Look forward to my review to find out!

Tarte Lights Camera Lashes

Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess Eau Fraiche

I had been interested in this perfume for many years, and a kind friend picked it up for me in the US.  The scent makes me think of tropical islands!

Milani Shadow Eyez in Sand Dunes

(link goes to my review)

This is a much loved product, and recently I have been using it as an eyeshadow base. I saw several Youtubers using the Almond Cream color as a dupe for MAC Painterly paint pot. I was skeptical, since most cream eyeshadows crease on me, but this really lasts on my eyes without creasing!

Throwback Thursday: Favorites from September

It’s time for Throwback Thursday, where I take a look back my favorites from years past. This time, I’m going back to my favorites from September 2014, 2013, and 2012.

In September 2014, I liked:

Make Up For Ever Mat Velvet + Foundation

I can’t believe I’ve never done a review on this foundation, considering it was my go-to for several years! I liked how this foundation applied and how it looked on my skin. I really like that this comes in a squeeze tube. It is hygienic and does not take up space!

Jordana Color Tint Blush in Coral Touch (link goes to my review)

I go back to these every year. They are cheap, have great color payoff, and look fantastic on my skin. I have almost used them up, so I’m looking forward to repurchasing them next time I go to the US!

Real Techniques Expert Face Brush (link goes to my review)

Still a product I love and use daily! If you like to buff in your foundation, this is the brush to buy. It is cheap, soft, and applies my foundation beautifully. Also, it is small enough that I can even buff in concealer under my eyes.

Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Brazilian Tan

Ahhhh, I searched for this lipstick all throughout New York. Finally, another blogger told me I could find it in Flushing! This is the perfect nude lipstick for me. Not only do I like how it looks on me, I also use it to tone down brighter lipsticks.

In September 2013, I liked:

The Beauty Blender (link goes to my review)

Wow, I really haven’t been using makeup sponges since I fell in love with the Real Techniques foundation brush. I remember there was a distinct difference between the Beauty Blender (right) and the Sonia Kashuk sponge (left). I don’t know if there are any other companies which make makeup sponges which are as bouncy as the Beauty Blender, which is what I liked so much about it.

VOV Daily Fresh Apple AHA Peeling Gel (link goes to my review)

This mask was one of the first products I ever reviewed on this blog, and I still think it is a great product to gently exfoliate my face. I haven’t used it recently, but writing this blog post made me remember that I like to exfoliate my face towards the end of summer.

In September 2012, I liked:

Milani Baked Blush in Luminoso

I no longer own this blush and I am not sure why. This is one of those peachy-pink shimmer blushes, along the same lines as the NARS Orgasm blush. While I liked this product, I didn’t like how big the packaging was.

As always, it was extremely interesting to see what I liked in past years. This month, there was a nice mix of products I still love and use every day, products I had forgotten about, and products that I no longer count in my favorites.

Any products you have rediscovered lately?
