Throwback Thursday: Favorites from July

This month, I am revisiting my favorites from July 2014 and 2015.  It seems I didn’t do a favorites in July 2013.  Apparently I have a habit of skipping favorites in the summer!

All links go to my past reviews!

In July 2015, I liked:

L’Oreal True Match Super Blendable Makeup

I recently finished this foundation! I bought this because everyone was talking about it.  It didn’t feel special, but it blended beautifully, looked good on my skin, and lasted quite well.  I would buy it again!

L'Oreal True Match Super Blendable Makeup

Ahhh, this was one of my favorites in the summer for quite a few years.  It is a local Indonesian brand which I recommend.  It is also very affordable!
Martha Tilaar Caring Colours Everlast BB Cream
I never repurchased this, but I did like how it made my eyelashes look.
Maybelline Volum' Express Pumped Up! Colossal mascara

Milani Eyeshadow primer

I recently started using this again, after I ran out of the UDPP.  This is very affordable and works well on my oily eyelids. I also love how simple the packaging is!

Noevir facial wash

I never repurchased this because it is VERY expensive.  Although this is a Japanese brand, this particular product is surprisingly unavailable in Japan.

Noevir Cleansing Crystals

Rimmel Stay Matte pressed powder

I loved the product, but I hated the packaging.  The lid broke in several places before I used up the product.

In July 2014, I liked:

Gatsby Ice Wipes

This is one of my holy grail products in the summer. I reviewed this in 2010 and I still use it.  I use it in the summer when I feel sticky but don’t feel like taking yet another shower, and it makes my body feel cooler and fresher.  Definitely a must have!

Gatsby body paper

Shirt Cool

This is a menthol spray that is applied to clothing, and will keep  you cool for about 30 minutes.  It is another must have for the summer!  I usually go through a bottle each year.

Biore UV Perfect Milk Sunscreen

This is one of my favorite sunscreens for spring and early summer. It is affordable, so that I can use it liberally.

Milani Shadow Eyez eyeshadow pencils

This was my favorite cream shadow for such a long time!  I tried to find it again when I was in New York, but I wasn’t able to.

Hope you enjoyed a look at my past favorites!

Empties for April 2015

I usually only do an empties post every few months, but for some reason I have a lot of empties in the month of April.

Bath and Body Works Vanilla Bean Marshmallow Candle (link goes to my review)

I really liked this candle, more than I expected. I have been unexpectedly liking sugary scents lately!

Bath and Body Works Twilight Woods shower gel (link goes to my review)

This is a much loved, much repurchased product. I like that the scent is pretty unisex, without any overly floral tones. I think this particular one was a gift from a good friend of mine.

Johnson’s Body Care Extra Care hand cream

This product and the entire line of Johnson’s Body Care seems to not be available in the US or UK. This was a hand cream that I used in the early spring. I liked that it was moisturizing without feeling heavy.

Bifesta Uruochi cleansing lotion (link goes to my review)

I picked up this product wondering if it would be a dupe for the Bioderma. While I liked the simplicity of just wiping my face, I found that this product did not completely remove my eyeliner and mascara.

Baby Oil

This winter, my skin was so dry that body lotions made my skin itch. I used baby oil for a while, and this was the cheapest one I could find.  Later, I switched to using pure olive oil on my skin.

Marc Jacobs Honey Eau de Parfum (link goes to my review)

Although this is only a sample, it lasted me over a month! I ended up buying the roller ball, which is also lasting me for a long time.

RoC Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Night Cream

I have purchased this quite a few times, but it looks like I never wrote a review of it. I like that it is hydrating moisturizer that sinks into my skin very quickly.

Bath and Body Works Fresh Brazil Citrus body lotion (link goes to my review)

I enjoyed the scent of this product, which smelled of pineapple and citrus. It reminded me of tropical summers!

Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray (link goes to my review)

After I cut my hair to a bob, I have been really loving salt sprays to give an effortless look to my hair!

Muji Blend Essential Oil in Relax

I don’t even know if Muji still sells this essential oil blend! I really enjoyed the lavender scent.

Review: Bifesta Uruochi Cleansing Lotion – a Bioderma dupe?

Can we take a moment to step back from the craze of Bioderma?  I feel like almost everyone in the beauty community online sings the praises of Bioderma.  To be honest, I prefer oil-based cleansers, especially since I have a few favorite brands which don’t leave a greasy residue on your skin.  I have reviewed Bioderma before, so I decided to give this local product a try.  This is a review of the Bifesta Uruochi Cleansing Lotion. Bifesta is a brand under the company Mandom, which makes the body wipes that I like so much.

What it does: (from the Bifesta website)

Removes makeup quickly while protecting the skins moisture. By wiping gently with a cotton, this product will remove eye makeup and foundation in your pores. No need to rinse off.

Price: Will vary depending on where you purchase. Amazon Japan lists this product for around 900 JPY (around $7.50) for the 300 ml bottle.

Scent: While there is a scent, it is only apparent when I sniff the product directly.

Availability: This product is widely available at Japanese drugstores.

Pros:

  • This product did a good job at getting off my makeup.
  • Even my eyeliner and mascara came off with just a few swipes
  • Although I rinsed my face after using it, not having to do so is a plus.

Cons:

  • I still feel like wiping my face with cotton is more effort than using an oil-based cleanser

Would I repurchase?  Yes, if I wanted to buy a water-based cleanser

This product was such a clear winner for me vs Bioderma! It did a great job of taking off my makeup including my eye makeup, which Bioderma did not do for me.  If you have access to this product, I really recommend it!

When using this product, I used the reusable cotton rounds I previously reviewed. I found that dampening the rounds with water helped the product to soak in better.

Review: Gatsby Ice Deodorant Body Paper Ice Citrus

This is a review of the Gatsby Ice Deodorant Body Paper Ice Citrus (yes, that’s the name of the product).

It may be back to school time in US, but it’s still REALLY hot and humid here in Japan.  We are constantly getting temperatures above 35C (95F).  It doesn’t cool down at night, either.  Night time temperatures are around 27C (80F).

When I want to quickly refresh myself, I turn to body wipes, such as these from Gatsby.

IMG_5499_final

Gatsby is a brand of body care products, mainly directed at men.  The brand is part of the Mandom group, famous in the blogger world for their makeup removers.  In Japan, Gatsby is famous for their deodorants and hair styling products, as well as the commercials featuring Takuya Kimura (of SMAP) and cool dancing!

What it does:
Cool down like ice and wipe away the sticky feeling!  The coolness from these ice deodorant papers will wipe away the stickiness and smell from sweat and leave your skin feeling refreshed.

-Citrus scent that helps you feel cool
-With coolness ingredients, the super cool feeling will last a long time
-Antiperspirant and deodorant (anti-bacterial) ingredients will block sweat and smell
-Papers (25cmx20cm) are thick, large, and soft, so that you can wipe your entire body with just one sheet.
-Free of parabens
(from Gatsby’s website, translated by K)

Price: about 400-450 yen ($4.50-5.25) for 30 sheets, depending where you buy them.  There is also a smaller package.

Pros:
– After wiping my body, the menthol immediately makes my body feel cool and refreshed
– Whatever is in it helps to remove the stickiness I get from sweating
– The cool feeling lasts for a while!!!
– The citrus smell is not very strong
– Each sheet is large (25cmx20cm = 9.8inches x 7.8inches), thick like a good quality paper towel, and is durable for wiping your entire body

Cons:
– This is contained in a bag which is resealed with a sticker, like makeup wipes.  It will eventually dry out.

My thoughts:
This has been my go-to product for this entire summer!  Sometimes I use them when I wake up, and sometimes I use them when I’ve just gotten home from work.  The smaller package would be great to carry in your purse to quickly refresh yourself during the day.

Would I repurchase:
I already have!

I hope that you’re enjoying the last bits of summer!  Summer doesn’t end in Japan until mid-September, and the hot, sticky weather will typically hang around until then!!
