Review: Make Up For Ever Smoky Extravagant Mascara

Some years ago, I signed up as a Sephora Beauty Insider. Although I only purchase from Sephora when I am in the US, I decided it was a good idea since their points do not expire.  As a Beauty Insider, I can receive a free birthday gift from Sephora, and last year I was lucky enough to be in New York to receive it.  This is a review of the Make Up For Ever Smoky Extravagant Mascara, which was a deluxe sample included in the birthday gift.

What it does: (from the Sephora website)

This clump-free mascara delivers long-lasting wear in one stroke. Using 4D technology, an exclusive microdefining wax complex envelopes the lash surface in ultrablack pigments for far-away impact and up-close precision. The dual-purpose, cone-shaped brush has a precision tip that separates lashes as the rounded base creates extravagant volume from any distance.

Price: $24

Availability: This and other Make Up For Ever products are available in the US at Sephora, Make Up For Ever boutiques, and their respective websites.

Brush: The brush on this mascara is very large, and is probably the largest brush I have ever used! It is also cone shaped, with a very small tip which was useful to get into small areas.

  • This mascara really gave me great length!
  • This product did not leave residue under my eyes, even after a full day of wearing it

  • The brush is huge, and felt very awkward.
  • The price.

Would I repurchase?  No.  This is a good mascara, and I am glad I got to try it.  If you have $24 to spare, or have a chance to buy this at a lower price, I recommend it.  However, it just wasn’t mindblowing compared to other drugstore brands.

I know, I know… I am very biased against expensive mascaras! Since I religiously throw out my mascaras after 3 months, I can’t justify spending >$20 on something which is not amazing!

Hope you enjoyed this review!

Review: Make Up For Ever Mat Velvet + Foundation

Every spring, I start searching for the best summer foundation.  One that doesn’t budge under hot weather, oily skin, and most importantly, sweat.  I had heard a lot of bloggers raving about the Make Up For Ever Mat Velvet + Foundation, and so I picked it up when I was last in the US.

What it does: (from the MUFE website)
Mat Velvet + provides a flawless result that lasts for hours. Its smooth texture is water resistant and long lasting. Great for combination to oily skin, this full coverage formula mattifies with a velvety finish. Mat Velvet+ can also be customized to your needs. Applied lightly, it gives a natural, matte look. Applied with several layers to help conceal blemishes, it creates a velvety finish. This oil-free and non comedogenic formula is suited to sensitive skin.

Price: $36 for 1.o1 oz

Availability: This foundation is available at Sephora, and other places that MUFE is available.

Swatch: I wear the color 40 in the summer and 35 in the spring and fall.  (for reference, I am around an NC 25 in MAC, and what Japanese makeup considers to be “normal” skin color)

  • This foundation is a buildable medium coverage. I like to apply it with the Real Techniques Expert Face Brush for natural looking skin.
  • This foundation dries to a matte finish, which I like.
  • I also like the squeeze tube packaging, as it is easy to squeeze out the smallest amount. It is also great for traveling.

  • This foundation does not suit me in the winter, when my skin turns very dry. I tried it once and got very patchy results, which I did not get with other matte foundations.
  • Unfortunately, this foundation is not sweat proof on me

Would I repurchase? Probably yes. In general, I like this foundation and how it looks on my skin.  I will be using it a lot in the coming few months before my skin starts getting very dry. I will still be looking for the perfect summer foundation, though!

What foundation do you like in the summer? Please let me know so I can try it out.

Monthly Favorites #45: September, 2014

Late, yes, I know!

If you have been reading my blog for some time, you will know that every summer I mention how September is still hot in Japan, and that we consider September to be part of summer. Maybe I mentioned it too much, because this September is already quite cool!

On to my favorites!

Make Up For Ever Mat Velvet + Foundation   (link goes to my review)

Now that the weather is cooling down, I have started to wear foundation again. I don’t really think this lasts all day, but it holds up better against my skin which is still in the summer=oily stage.

Jordana Color Tint Blush in Coral Touch
(link goes to my review)
I am not sure when I will go back to wearing powder blushes. I have really been loving cream blushes since I picked up a few in New York this spring.

Real Techniques Expert Face Brush (link goes to my review)

This brush is by far my favorite face brush. I use this brush to blend in my cream blushes. I also use it to blend in my foundation. I probably should have picked up another one when I was in the US!!

Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Brazilian Tan

This product was part of the Revlon Rio Rush collection for Summer 2014, and I picked it up while I was in New York.  This is a true nude lipstick on me without making me look like I have concealer on my lips. I also love the formula!

I had a hard time finding this lipstick, and luckily one of my twitter friends told me exactly which drugstore she had seen it in!

What products have you been loving this month?

Haul in New York

I am back from my trip to New York! As I mentioned before, I grew up in New York, so it’s always great to see my old friends.  I’m still sorting through pictures, but here is a post on what I hauled!

I don’t normally post hauls, but I treated myself since I had just finished Project 20 Pan again. It’s one of my pleasures of going to the US!

Please let me know if there is anything you want to see a review on!

Revlon Colorstay Foundation for Oily/Combination Skin
This is available in Japan as well, but (1) it comes with a pump, (2) there is only one formula, (3) it costs $25.

L’Oreal Youth Code Dark Spot Correcting & Illuminating Serum Corrector
Is it really necessary to have the word “correcting” in the name twice?  However, I have heard great things about this serum, and I’m testing it out now.

Milani Baked Blush in Luminoso
The color isn’t THIS vibrant… you can see that my background is very blue!

Rimmel Fix & Perfect Pro primer
This is the upgraded version of the primer which I previously loved. The bonus is that it is now white instead of the weird orange color that the other one is!

Cover Girl Lash Perfection mascara
I’m surprised I like this mascara so much. It gives me volume without the huge brush of Lash Blast!

L’Oreal Infallible lipgloss
I’ve raved about these before! They obviously don’t last 8 hrs, but I really like the formula, and the wands are also interesting.

I limited myself at Bath and Body Works, surprisingly.
Bath and Body Works Aromatherapy Energy Orange Ginger travel sized shower gel and body lotion
The full sized bottles of these were in very heavy plastic. I would probably drop them in my shower!

Bath and Body Works Coconut Lime Breeze travel sized shower gel and body lotion
Not sure what I think of the scent yet, but I wanted to remind myself that summer (and summer vacation season) is just around the corner.

Bath and Body Works Aromatherapy Sleep Lavender Chamomile travel sized shower gel and body lotion
I enjoyed the scents in this line very much. A nice change since Bath and Body Works scents have become more generic in the past few years.
Bath and Body Works Aromatherapy Stress Relief Eucalyptus Spearmint body cream
The only full sized item I bought!

Bath and Body Works Malibu Heat body lotion
This was a $1 bottle that they were selling to get people to try the scent before it is officially released.

L’Occitane Hand Cream
$28 at Sephora in the US, $38 in Japan (mostly due to the exchange rate)

Maybelline Illegal Lengths Mascara
The ads say that this will add 4mm (which I highly doubt), but I always want to try a few new drugstore mascaras when I visit the US!

Sally Hansen Salon Effects Real Nail Polish Strips
I bought a bunch of these. They are perfect for girls like me who are crappy at painting their own nails! I tried one when I was in NY – and they definitely need a top coat!

L’Oreal Infallible eyeshadows in Iced Latte and Gold Imperial
With so much hype, I had to try this product out!

This became my go-to eyeshadow during my vacation. Easy and flattering.
You can see that on my skin, it ends up looking almost white.

This is a LE color for summer. It is very gorgeous!  Very gold and much more glittery than the other ones.

This picture makes my skin look very yellow!

The much hyped Naked 2 pallete
I actually haven’t played around with this yet, but I’m looking forward to it!

Revlon Precision eyelash glue
I tried this after hearing that it’s just as good as the DUO lash adhesive. It’s better – cheaper and the brush applicator is so much easier to use!

Make Up For Ever Mat Velvet + Foundation
I’m looking forward to trying this in the summer!

Not as big of a haul as you’d expect, but I excluded some staple products that I buy each time I go to the US, like my Clarisonic brush heads.  Please let me know if there are any products that you would like me to review!
