Throwback: Favorites from March

It’s the time of the month to revisit some old favorites!   Here is a look back at my favorites from 2014 and 2015!

In March 2015, I liked:

Barry M Dazzle Dust in Rose Gold
(picture from my Instagram)

I used up this eyeshadow a while ago!  I haven’t bought a new Barry M Dazzle Dust in a few years, and I hope they are still as good as I remember!

L’Oreal Voluminous Miss Manga mascara (link goes to my review)

While I initially liked this mascara, it ended up smudging under my eyes.  I really like that L’Oreal mascaras click shut, so if I recommend them if you can find a formula that works for you.

Putting foundation into little squeeze tubes for traveling
(picture from my Instagram)

This is still the way I carry my foundation when I am traveling. I use bottles which are intended to put into bentos, which don’t leak and are 8 for $1!

In March 2014, I liked:

Revlon ColorStay Whipped Creme Foundation (link goes to my review)

This was one of my favorite foundations for a very long time. However, Revlon foundations have gotten really expensive, and I can find better foundations at a department store.

Dejavu Lasting Fine R Pencil eyeliner (link goes to my review)

I haven’t repurchased this in a while, but it is a great long lasting pencil eyeliner.

Urban Decay Naked 3 palette

Between the Barry M pigment I liked in 2015, and the Naked 3 palette I liked in 2014, apparently I like rose gold in March!  I still own this palette and I use it regularly.

Wow, this month I am only using  2 of the 6 products I used to like!

Throwback Thursday: Favorites from March

This month, I revisited my monthly favorites from March 2012 & 2014. I was going to do a March 2013 throwback, but it looks like I did not do a favorites that month.

Here are my favorites from March 2012:

Laneige Water Sleeping Pack EX
(link goes to my review)

This was a great mask that left my skin hydrated and not sticky. Unfortunately, I didn’t repurchase it since I never found a place to purchase it near me. Laneige is becoming easier to find outside of Korea, so I do recommend picking this up if you have a chance.

Here are my favorites from March 2014:

Revlon ColorStay Whipped Creme Foundation
(link goes to my review)

This product was all the rave on Youtube last year. While I liked the foundation, the packaging is HUGE.  I personally prefer the original ColorStay liquid foundation to this product.

Dejavu Lasting Fine R Pencil eyeliner
(link goes to my review)

This was a great eyeliner when I wanted to line my eyes yet still look natural. This product lasts even on my lower lids!  I definitely recommend it if you want a natural looking  eyeliner.

Urban Decay Naked 3 palette

Has it been a year already since this palette was released? Rose gold looks good on me, so I really enjoy this palette. Of the 3 Naked palettes, my top favorite is the original Naked palette.

MAC Naked Lunch eyeshadow

I still love this eyeshadow, but I haven’t reached for it lately since there is another gold highlight color I am trying to use up. This post reminded me how much I enjoy this color!

Are there any products you rediscovered lately?

Favorites of 2014

Here are my favorites from 2014! If you are interested in seeing my past favorites, I have done an annual roundup for 20132012,2011, 2010, and 2009.

Skin Care

Best makeup remover: Shiseido TISS Deep Off cleansing oil (link goes to my review)

I went back to this product this year. It removes every trace of makeup quickly and easily, including waterproof eye makeup, and rinses clean without any residue.

IMG_1389_final

Best sunscreen: Biore UV Perfect Milk sunscreen (link goes to my review)

We all know that we should wear sunscreen religiously, but some sunscreens are just uncomfortable. This product is light, easy to apply, and doesn’t leave my skin sticky… all with SPF 50+.

Makeup

Best foundation: Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay in Place makeup

I love how this foundation looks and I love how it lasts, but I did not like that there was no pump. Imagine my surprise when I realized that a pump I had lying around the house (from Daiso, no less) was an EXACT match!  (photo from my Instagram)

Best BB cream: Martha Tilaar Caring Colours Everlast BB Cream (link goes to my review)

Definitely pick this up if you have a chance to go to Indonesia. Somehow, it makes my skin look good, even though I can see the discoloration on my skin.

IMG_3690_final

Best concealer: Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser Dark Circles Concealer Treatment (link goes to my review)

I picked this up in New York just because of all the hype online, with the full intent of doing a negative review. Surprisingly, it not only made my under eye circles look better, it also lasted on my skin.

IMG_5234_final

Best eyeshadow: Milani Shadow Eyez eyeshadow pencil (link goes to my review)

Definitely one of the best finds of the year! I went to no less than 5 drugstores before I found them, and they were definitely worth the effort!!  Creamy, good pigmentation, and no creasing!!!

IMG_4797_final

Best eyeliner (tie): Dejavu Lasting Fine R Pencil eyeliner (link goes to my review)

Black liquid eyeliner is what most Japanese girls use, hence finding a brown pencil eyeliner already has 2 strikes against me. Not only does this product fit my needs, it even lasts on my lower lashline.  Because it is so thin, it also looks incredibly natural.

IMG_4668_final

Best eyeliner (tie): Jordana 12HR Made To Last Eyeliner in Espresso Last

Why did I wait so long to try this? This eyeliner is creamy, pigmented, and only $2.50!!! I will definitely be picking up a few more next time I am in the US!

Best blush: Jordana Color Tint Blush Stick in Blushed (link goes to my review)

Another hit product from Jordana! I remember being in the aisle of a drugstore in US, looking up product recommendations from a trusted blogger who loves cheap products. This year has been the year of cream blushers – I probably wore powder blushes for only 2 months out of 12!

IMG_5218_final

Best lipstick shade: Rimmel Moisture Renew Lipstick in 340 To Nude or Not To Nude?

Most lipsticks make the skin on my lips peel, and I consider it a normal part of wearing lipstick. I was so surprised to finally find a lipstick I can wear without flakey skin coming off throughout the day! Not really a traditional “My Lips But Better” shade, but this warm pink color with shimmer makes my entire face look better.

Other beauty products

Best body lotion: Johnson and Johnson Baby Oil (link goes to my review)

For most of the year, I use many different body lotions, with no specific favorite. This winter, needing more protection, I started using baby oil.  I almost never repurchase body lotions, but I have purchased this multiple times already.

Best nail product: Sally Hansen Salon Effects

Another product that I love and that I purchase every time I am in the US. I wear these with a gel topcoat over them.   I love how they look and I love the cute patterns!  I especially like Misbehaved  and Laced Up (shown below).

Best hair product: Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray

I always liked the windblown look, but somehow I could only make it work when I was traveling to a tropical location.  Now that my hair is shorter, I use this spray every day to achieve the look!

IMG_4750_final

Best new product: Shirt Cool Spray (link goes to my review)

Japan is hot and humid in the summer, and is also a country where you are expected to walk places. This spray kept me cool for a full 30 minutes after applying!

IMG_5497_final

Tools

Best new brush: Real Techniques Expert Face Brush

Why have I not reviewed this product yet? I love this brush and have been using it consistently since this spring. It is great for applying foundation, concealer, and cream blushers! I should purchase another one since I use it so much!!

IMG_4585_final

Best overall tool: Reusable Cotton Rounds (link goes to my review)

If you use cotton rounds for anything, buy these!  No more throwing out cotton after one use, no more spending money on expensive imported cotton rounds! (Although to be honest, the Shiseido Cotton pads that are hyped on Youtube are very affordable in Japan!)

Major highlight of my life

I have lost weight… and am continuing to do so

I changed my eating and exercising regiment since late June, and have lost about 8 kg. It is not easy, especially since I easily overeat when I go somewhere. Hopefully I will finally get to a “normal” weight!

Thanks again for a great 2014, and hope you have a wonderful 2015!

Review: Dejavu Lasting Fine R Pencil eyeliner – A pencil eyeliner which lasts

Over the past few months, I have started to enjoy more natural looking makeup. For example, I have come to realize that liquid eyeliner looks much too harsh on my eyes. I tried lining my eyes with gel or pencil eyeliner and then smudging the line, but it still looked a little too vampy for me.

Finally, I gave up on black eyeliner and decided to move to a brown eyeliner. This was hard! Many of the brown eyeliners that I tried were much too red-toned. I tried out several brands before I found a shaded which I liked.

This is a review of the Dejavu Lasting Fine R Pencil eyeliner. Dejavu is a Japanese brand which is famous for its mascara, such as the Dejavu Fiberwig mascara.  I reviewed a different line of mascara from Dejavu, the Volume Film Lash Knockout Mascara, in 2010 (*gulp*).

This is a pencil eyeliner which twists up.  It is incredibly fine and smooth, allowing me to draw a very fine line along my eyelashes.

What it does: (from the Dejavu website)
Highly defined eyes all day long! A silicone fixative provides super holding power. We’ve successfully added even more adhesive constituents, meanings lines last even longer. It resists oil, sweat and tears – which can cause Panda Eyes – for a long-wearing rub-resistant finish.
Smooth, easy to draw! Silky smooth application with a soft, easy-draw pencil lead. A lead with just-right hardness: fills between eyelashes, makes inside lines top and bottom that stay thin – just as you drew them.

Price: 1200 JPY, around $12.  Please note that consumption tax (a country-wide tax similar to sales tax) has just increased from 5% to 8% starting April 1.

Availability:  In Japan, this product is widely available at drugstores.

Pros:

  • I love that this eyeliner lasts. This is the first time an eyeliner didn’t fade or rub away over the course of the day
  • The black-brown color is just what I was looking for. This product also comes in 2 other colors.
  • The pencil tip is really fine and smooth, which makes it very easy to use.
Cons:
  • I can’t really think of any!  Wow!
Would I repurchase?  Yes.  I really liked this eyeliner and I definitely recommend it if you are looking for a pencil eyeliner!
This is the first time in a long time that I have really loved a color cosmetic product!  Hope you enjoyed this review!

Up and Down #41: March, 2014

What is going on with the weather recently? We had major snow in Japan twice in February, causing a lot of public transportation to stop as well as accidents in general. There were even some small villages which got cut off from the rest of Japan because the main roads got blocked!  The weather warmed up a little last week, but it is supposed to get freezing cold again this week.

But..it’s March! Sakura season is supposed to start in late March! All the spring stuff is supposed to start from March!!!

Ups:

(link goes to my review)
I went back to using this foundation this month because my skin got too dry for the Estee Lauder Double Wear that I had been loving.  It is still a little cakey around my nose which, surprisingly, is one of my oiliest areas.

Dejavu Lasting Fine R Pencil eyeliner
I had been looking for a dark brown pencil eyeliner and I love this! It goes on smoothly and REALLY does not budge.  A review is coming up soon!
Urban Decay Naked 3 palette
I am really quite loving this palette this month. The great thing about owning such a popular palette is that there are so many tutorials online to help me come up with new looks!

MAC Naked Lunch eyeshadow
I need an inner corner highlight when I use the Naked 3 palette because the two shades which are included in the palette are either too matte (Strange) or too glittery (Dust). Naked Lunch is a good medium!
Down:
I stopped using face powder for the first time in my life!
I am always oily around my nose, but somehow, I have recently also been getting fine lines in that area.  Powder makes these lines more visible, so I have given up wearing face powder.  My base makeup looks better now!

How was your February?  Are the seasons changing where you live?
