Throwback: Favorites from January

Here is a look back at my favorites from January 2014 and 2015. Can you believe that 2015 is already 2 years ago!?

In January 2015, I liked:

Nichido Multiple Stick in South Beach (link goes to my review)

Nichido is a local brand in the Philippines. It is quite affordable, and I really liked this blush.

Nichido 7x Volume Curl mascara (link goes to my review)

This is another Nichido product that I enjoyed. And it was only $7!

Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray (link goes to my review)

LOVE! I really enjoy salt sprays in my hair, and the Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray is the original. It smells great, and the mist is distributed in my hair evenly. There are drugstore salt sprays available now, but I have a soft spot for this product.

In January 2014, I liked:

Martha Tilaar Caring Colours BB cream (link goes to my review)

Martha Tilaar is a local Indonesian brand, and I really, really enjoyed this BB cream. It was affordable, made my skin look even, and stayed on in the hot humid weather.

L’Oreal Infallible eyeshadows in Forever Pink and Sahara Treasure

I still love the L’Oreal Infallible eyeshadows, and I’m always on a hunt for new colors.

Revlon ColorBurst Lip Butter in Creme Brulee (link goes to my review)

This is a great line for people like me who don’t wear lipstick on a regular basis.  I especially like this color to tone down lipsticks which are too bright.

Neutrogena Wet Skin SPF 85+

I always buy a bottle of this when I go to Hawaii, and I end up using it all in the week or so that I am there. Spray sunscreens are very convenient, but liquid sunscreens seem to provide better protection for me. However, in the end, the key is to apply sunscreen regularly, so I’ll use whatever works.

Hope you enjoyed seeing my past favorites!

Products I’ve Repurchased – Skin, Hair, and Body

The market is flooded with new products all the time, but which products have stood the test of time? I’m always interested to see what products people have repurchased, because those are the real favorites.   Surprisingly, the last time I did a blog post on items I repurchased was way back in 2011!

In this post, I will share the skin care and hair products which I have repurchased.

If you are interested to see what I repurchased in 2011, here are links to the old posts:

Skin products

Face wash net (link goes to my review)

I always, always use a face wash net when washing my face. It creates a rich, creamy lather. These are available at Daiso and other 100 yen stores, and I’ve repurchased them countless times.

Cotton Labo Mekuru Cotton Large Size (link goes to my review)

This cotton sheet is made up of 5 thin layers, so that they can be split to make lotion masks. I like this brand so much that I bought tons of backups when I lived abroad.

MKB Cleansing Oil

This is a store brand cleansing oil from Matsumoto Kiyoshi (a drugstore chain in Japan), and it is surprisingly good. It rinses clean, doesn’t have a strong scent, and dissolves makeup well.

Rohto Hadalabo Gokujun hyaluronic acid essence (link goes to my review)

This is a well-loved essence which I have repurchased countless times. It moisturizes well and is very affordable!

Lush Brazen Honey Fresh Face Mask (link goes to my review)

This is still my favorite mask from Lush, which I use to pamper my skin. Fresh Face Masks go bad pretty quickly, so I suggest freezing them if you can’t use them up.

Hair products

Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray (link goes to my review)

Ever since I cut my hair, I have been loving salt sprays to add texture. The Bumble and Bumble one is still my favorite.

Lush Sea Spray  (link goes to my review)

Since I can’t buy the Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray in Japan, I like to buy the Lush Sea Spray.

Body products

Nivea Sun Protect Water Gel

This has been my go-to sunscreen, both for my body and for my face. I like that it dries down quickly and doesn’t leave a residue on my skin.

Seabreeze Deo+Water deodorant (link goes to my review)

This has been my go-to deodorant for a very, very long time. It is hard to find antiperspirants in Japan, so I stick with deodorants.

Shirt Cool (link goes to my review)

A favorites post in the summer time always includes a mention about Shirt Cool. This is a menthol spray that you apply to your clothes, and it keeps you feeling cool for about 30 minutes.  It is a lifesaver in the hot, humid summers!

Gatsby Ice Deodorant Body Paper Ice Citrus (link goes to my review)

I go through about a pack and a half every summer. Although there are several brands which sell cooling wipes, I found that the Gatsby Ice Deodorant one has the strongest cooling sensation. I also usually have a smaller package to keep in my purse.

Bath and Body Works Twilight Woods (link goes to my review)

I like Bath and Body Works products a lot, and I tend to buy a few every time I’m in the US. With so many new scents coming out all the time, there are very few that I have repurchased.  The Twilight Woods scent is one of the few that I have bought multiple times.

Bath and Body Works Aromatherapy Energy Orange Ginger (link goes to my review)

This is the other Bath and Body Works scent that I have repurchased. It is fresh and  energizing!

Wow, I’m surprised to see that there are some products that I’ve never reviewed, even though I’ve bought them multiple times.  Looks like I have some reviews to write!

Empties for April 2015

I usually only do an empties post every few months, but for some reason I have a lot of empties in the month of April.

Bath and Body Works Vanilla Bean Marshmallow Candle (link goes to my review)

I really liked this candle, more than I expected. I have been unexpectedly liking sugary scents lately!
Bath and Body Works Vanilla Bean Marshmallow Empty

Bath and Body Works Twilight Woods shower gel (link goes to my review)

This is a much loved, much repurchased product. I like that the scent is pretty unisex, without any overly floral tones. I think this particular one was a gift from a good friend of mine.

Johnson’s Body Care Extra Care hand cream

This product and the entire line of Johnson’s Body Care seems to not be available in the US or UK. This was a hand cream that I used in the early spring. I liked that it was moisturizing without feeling heavy.

Bifesta Uruochi cleansing lotion (link goes to my review)

I picked up this product wondering if it would be a dupe for the Bioderma. While I liked the simplicity of just wiping my face, I found that this product did not completely remove my eyeliner and mascara.

Baby Oil

This winter, my skin was so dry that body lotions made my skin itch. I used baby oil for a while, and this was the cheapest one I could find.  Later, I switched to using pure olive oil on my skin.

Marc Jacobs Honey Eau de Parfum (link goes to my review)

Although this is only a sample, it lasted me over a month! I ended up buying the roller ball, which is also lasting me for a long time.

IMG_6864

RoC Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Night Cream

I have purchased this quite a few times, but it looks like I never wrote a review of it. I like that it is hydrating moisturizer that sinks into my skin very quickly.

IMG_6852

Bath and Body Works Fresh Brazil Citrus body lotion (link goes to my review)

I enjoyed the scent of this product, which smelled of pineapple and citrus. It reminded me of tropical summers!

IMG_6844

Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray (link goes to my review)

After I cut my hair to a bob, I have been really loving salt sprays to give an effortless look to my hair!

IMG_6840

Muji Blend Essential Oil in Relax

I don’t even know if Muji still sells this essential oil blend! I really enjoyed the lavender scent.

Monthly Favorites #52: April, 2015

I’ve mentioned before that April is the start of the school year in Japan, and also the start of the Fiscal Year in many Japanese companies. During this season, I always want to buy new stationery – probably similar to how I want to buy Back to School stuff if I’m in the US at the end of August.

On to my Monthly Favorites!

Milani eyeshadow primer
(link goes to my review)

This is such a great primer for oily eyelids like mine. It is affordable and in a simple squeeze tube, and it keeps my eyeshadow vibrant and creaseproof for the entire day.

IMG_6684_final

Marc Jacobs Honey Perfume

I bought a roller ball of this perfume when I was in New York last spring, and have fallen back in love this spring! This has a fresh, slightly fruity scent which dries down to warmer notes.

IMG_6789

Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray
(link goes to my review)

I’m still in love with this spray and how it makes my hair look effortless.  It works especially well now that my hair is chin length.

IMG_4750_final

Bath and Body Works Cinnamon donut candle

This is another candle that I bought at Bath and Body Works during my trip. I typically don’t like such sweet scents, but this one has been nice.

Review: Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray

While I was in Hawaii, I spent almost every day scuba diving.  A side effect of this was that I had constant beach hair! I kind of gave up on shampooing all of the salt water out of my hair since I was only going to be back in the ocean the next day. Instead, I embraced the texture I got!

In fact, I loved it so much that I decided to keep using salt spray in my hair.  Salt sprays give my hair an effortless, windblown look with more volume.  This is a review of the Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray, one of the most iconic salt sprays available.

I always go back to this product in the summer. It has been featured in my 2014 Favorites post, as well as a previous post on Must Haves for a Summer Resort.

What it does: (from the Bumble and Bumble website)

Salt-infused for sexy, windswept, beachy texture (whenever, wherever). Adds body, has light hold and a matte finish; excellent for all hair types.

Price: $27 for 4oz, or $15 for 1.7oz

Availability: This product is available at Sephora, Bumble and Bumble’s website, and through select hair salons

Scent: This product has a light floral scent. Although I can smell the product when I mist it on my hair, I do not notice the scent as the day goes on.

Pros:

  • This product adds volume and texture, making my hair look like I just got back from a day on the beach
  • Styling with this product is really easy and effortless. I spray it onto damp or dry hair, and let it dry.

Cons:

  • This product is sticky. Once I apply it to my hair, I make an effort not to touch it.
  • I could probably make a decent salt spray for my hair by myself, which would be much cheaper.

Would I repurchase?  Yes, I have repurchased this product already.

I really like this product, especially since I cut my hair. When I had long hair, this was a great product for making beachy waves and for adding volume to a ponytail.  Since I cut my hair into a bob, I have loved it even more!

Hope you enjoyed this review!
