Empties from September – October 2016

I realize it is no longer October… but I wrote a draft post 2 months ago, and I don’t feel like updating it with all the empties from November!

Here is a look at the products I used up in the past 2 months.

Jordana 12 Hour Made To Last Liquid Eyeliner Pencil

I’ve repurchased this pencil several times, so I’m surprised that I never wrote a review for it. It is very affordable and very creamy. I like my eyeliner to be dark brown rather than black, since black just seems to make my eyes look very harsh.

Maybelline lipstick

I think I bought this 4 years ago… I continued to use it since it didn’t smell off, but the shade name has rubbed off, so I have no idea what this product is called!

Skindinavia The Makeup Finishing Spray (link goes to my review)

Apparently this is the same product as the Urban Decay setting spray. I like that Skindinavia ships abroad!  I recommend that you wait for a sale – there are always sale codes around so it doesn’t make sense to pay full price.

MKB cleansing oil

This is an off brand product from Matsumoto Kiyoshi, a Japanese drugstore. I originally picked this up because it was significantly cheaper than brand name cleansing oils. Surprisingly, I like this much better than other oils, and I have repurchased this several times.

Biore Baking Soda Cleansing Scrub (link goes to my review)

I bought this product when I went to New York this spring because there were advertisements EVERYWHERE.  I liked it… but I didn’t like that it did not rinse off cleanly.

Seabreeze Deo + Water deodorant (link goes to my review)

I have repurchased this so many times. I refill a small spray bottle with this product because the original packaging is just not easy to use.

Gatsby Ice Deodorant Body Paper Ice Citrus (link goes to my review)

This is another must have for the summer. This is the strongest body wipe that I’ve found, and the cooling sensation lasts for some time.

Bath and Body Works body lotion in Honolulu Sun

This was not a memorable body lotion for me. In the winter, I try not to use fragranced body lotions as the perfume irritates my skin.

Rohto Z! eye drops

These were the STRONGEST eye drops on the market… until Rohto came out with an even stronger version.

I’m so behind on my blog posts!

Empties from June and July 2016

Here are my empties from June and July.  This month, I made some great progress!

(all links go to my reviews)

L’Oreal True Match Super Blendable Makeup (link goes to my review)

I bought this foundation after reading several positive reviews online. This product blended very well and made my skin look great.  However, it is extremely liquidy, so I recommend putting it into a pump.

Urban Decay Primer Potion (link goes to my review)

Wow, I used up a UDPP! I wish they still came in squeeze tubes like this one. Currently, I’m using the Milani eyeshadow primer, which is very affordable and works well for my oily eyelids.

Bibo Eyeful Eyebrow Pencil in Light Brown

Because most Japanese people naturally have dark hair, it is hard to find eyebrow products for lighter hair. I have been using this light brown eyebrow pencil for a long time.

Escada Turquoise Summer Eau de Toilette (link goes to my review)

This is a berry-scented eau de toilette, and a very interesting scent for early summer.

IMG_8051

Chloe Eau de Parfum (link goes to my review)

This is a sweet, floral scent, which I enjoyed using in the spring.

IMG_7983

MKB cleansing oil

I seem to be using one of these every 2 months. Although it is a store-brand product from Matsumoto Kiyoshi (a major drugstore in Japan), I like it better than other cleansing oils.

IMG_8048

Curel Ultra Healing Intensive Lotion

This is a very rich moisturizing cream for the body.

IMG_7979

Nivea Sun Protect Water Gel

This is my go-to facial SPF.  I like it because it does not make my skin greasy. However, this product has alcohol in it, so some people may not like using it on their face.

Biore UV Perfect Milk sunscreen (link goes to my review)

This used to be my go-to sunscreen for the body.  It is a little greasy, so I like it better in the cooler months.

Kose Sun Cut Sunscreen Gel SPF 50 Waterproof

I really did not like this sunscreen. Although it is called a gel, I felt it was very thick. It also left a white cast on my skin.

Throwback Thursday: Favorites from July

This month, I am revisiting my favorites from July 2014 and 2015.  It seems I didn’t do a favorites in July 2013.  Apparently I have a habit of skipping favorites in the summer!

All links go to my past reviews!

In July 2015, I liked:

L’Oreal True Match Super Blendable Makeup

I recently finished this foundation! I bought this because everyone was talking about it.  It didn’t feel special, but it blended beautifully, looked good on my skin, and lasted quite well.  I would buy it again!

L'Oreal True Match Super Blendable Makeup

Ahhh, this was one of my favorites in the summer for quite a few years.  It is a local Indonesian brand which I recommend.  It is also very affordable!
Martha Tilaar Caring Colours Everlast BB Cream
I never repurchased this, but I did like how it made my eyelashes look.
Maybelline Volum' Express Pumped Up! Colossal mascara

Milani Eyeshadow primer

I recently started using this again, after I ran out of the UDPP.  This is very affordable and works well on my oily eyelids. I also love how simple the packaging is!

Noevir facial wash

I never repurchased this because it is VERY expensive.  Although this is a Japanese brand, this particular product is surprisingly unavailable in Japan.

Noevir Cleansing Crystals

Rimmel Stay Matte pressed powder

I loved the product, but I hated the packaging.  The lid broke in several places before I used up the product.

In July 2014, I liked:

Gatsby Ice Wipes

This is one of my holy grail products in the summer. I reviewed this in 2010 and I still use it.  I use it in the summer when I feel sticky but don’t feel like taking yet another shower, and it makes my body feel cooler and fresher.  Definitely a must have!

Gatsby body paper

Shirt Cool

This is a menthol spray that is applied to clothing, and will keep  you cool for about 30 minutes.  It is another must have for the summer!  I usually go through a bottle each year.

Biore UV Perfect Milk Sunscreen

This is one of my favorite sunscreens for spring and early summer. It is affordable, so that I can use it liberally.

Milani Shadow Eyez eyeshadow pencils

This was my favorite cream shadow for such a long time!  I tried to find it again when I was in New York, but I wasn’t able to.

Hope you enjoyed a look at my past favorites!

Review: Biore Baking Soda Cleansing Scrub

This is a review of the Biore Baking Soda Cleansing Scrub.  When I was in New York this spring, there were so many advertisements for this product that I really wanted to try it.

IMG_8063

What it does: (from Ulta’s website)

Biore Baking Soda Cleansing Scrub gently exfoliates your skin then naturally dissolves so you never over scrub. This innovative powder activates with water to deep clean pores and leaves your skin visibly smoother in just one week!

Price: about $10

Availability: This product should be available widely in drugstores, but it was hard for me to find it.  I finally found it at Bed Bath and Beyond.

What I thought:

This is a cleanser in powder form.  At first I was worried that it would be too abrasive, but after I used a face net, there was a nice lather.  I liked how it made my skin feel smooth, but I did not like how it did not rinse clean, and I kept feeling like I had residue on my face.

Would I repurchase? No. If you are looking for a baking soda cleanser, I recommend the Keana Nadeshiko powder.

Unfortunately, this product did not live up to my expectations!

Hope you enjoyed this review!

Review: Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Gel SPF 50+

This is a review of the Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Gel SPF 50+. As I mentioned in a previous post, I go through a lot of sunscreen in the summer, and this is one of the ones I bought this year.
Biore UV Aqua Rich

What it does: (from Biore’s website)

Spreads easily and feels like water, but still blocks UV rays. SPF50+, but feels light. While blocking UV rays, a veil of light will keep your skin looking moisturized and bright. Prevents age spots and freckles. Also blocks UV-A rays, which cause decreased skin elasticity. SPF50+, PA++++. For both face and body.

Price: the price of sunscreen varies widely. In the summer, the price drops to the 600-700 JPY range, but in the winter, the price increases to around 800 JPY.

Availability: This product is widely available in Japanese drugstores, as well as through Rakuten and other Japanese websites.

Pros:

  • Light and absorbs well. It really feels like a light gel on the skin, so I don’t hesitate to apply it liberally
  • Can be used on both the face and the body. Some gel sunscreens cannot be applied to the face because they contain a large amount of alcohol, but this product did not irritate my skin
  • Provides the highest amount of UV protection allowed in Japan (any product with over SPF 50 must be shown as SPF 50+ in Japan)

Cons:

  • Somehow, this product flaked off of my skin. As my skin rubbed against things, I would see white powdery flakes appear.
  • This product leaves a somewhat sticky residue on my skin.

Would I repurchase? No. I tried applying it several different ways, but the white flakes are a major deal breaker, both from the appearance and also because it defeats the purpose of wearing sunscreen!

While I did not appreciate this sunscreen, there are many brands of sunscreen in Japan which have the same light, gel-type texture, and are very affordable. They are very easy and comfortable to use for UV protection year round.

Hope you enjoyed this review!
