Review: Cover FX Custom Cover Drops

This past summer, I spent a lot of time in Okinawa, the southern most island of Japan which has a subtropical to tropical climate.  I also like to take a trip to Hawaii in the winter as well.  While I try to wear SPF 50+ when I go to to these places, I usually forget to reapply sunscreen and I end up getting tan.

After I get back from my trip, my foundation is always too light! Because most Japanese people have similar skin tones, it is quite difficult for me to find a foundation that matches, or one that I can use to adjust the color.  Sometimes, I buy a darker foundation at the drugstore when I am in the US, but then I have the risk of changing the finish of my original foundation.

When I first heard about the Cover FX Custom Cover Drops, I immediately thought, “oooh, maybe I can get a darker color to mix in with my foundation and adjust the color!”  Therefore, I bought the shade N70, For medium to deeply tanned skin with neutral undertones”

What it does: (from the Sephora website)

These award winning, revolutionary drops of pure pigment were not designed to be worn alone but instead allow you to transform all of your favorite liquid beauty products into your ideal foundation or tinted moisturizer. With this breakthrough formula you can customize both your level of coverage and desired finish. What you choose to mix Custom Cover Drops with will determine your finish. For a radiant finish, add to products like oils, serums, or creams. For a matte finish, mix with a mattifying primer or lightweight lotion. Just drop in your desired amount of Custom Cover Drops: one drop achieves sheer coverage, two drops imparts medium coverage, three drops provides full coverage, and four drops leaves you with utra-full coverage.

Price: $44 for 15 ml

Availability: I found this product at Sephora online, Sephora stores, and the Cover FX website.

What I thought: The shade I bought worked extremely well. I started off mixing a medium sized drop with my foundation, and as my tan wore off, I used less and less until I was using my original foundation shade.  I don’t really like the packaging – the screw of the bottle seems to be a little loose and I was afraid that some of the product would seep out.

Would I repurchase?  Yes. Even though I don’t like the packaging, this product works great at changing the shade of my foundation without changing the texture.

Review: Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Foundation

I loved the Make Up For Ever Mat Velvet + Foundation (which I recently used up… finally!), so when I was excited to hear about the Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Foundation.  There were so many great reviews online.  Let’s see how it worked for me!

What it does: (from the Sephora website)

Developed specifically for the film and TV industry’s most advanced technology, Ultra HD Liquid Foundation creates a naturally flawless complexion—in and out of the spotlight. Invisible under the latest, super-focused 4k lens, this revolutionary foundation features uniquely-coated pigments that provide medium to buildable coverage with an even lighter weight, second-skin texture that looks just like skin. This formula leaves your complexion with the same flawless results that you’d achieve with a flat foundation brush in a tap and stretch motion. It contains hyaluronic spheres to ensure comfortable wear on all normal, dry and combination skin types, and it lasts all day, leaving a natural-looking finish. Now available in an expanded range of 40 shades to match all skintones, Ultra HD is the perfect everyday foundation for a flawless complexion—and it doesn’t require touch ups.

Price: $43 for 1.01 oz. For comparison, the MUFE Mat Velvet+ is $39 for the same amount of product.

Availability:  Sephora.com says this is an exclusive product.

What I thought:

Let’s compare this to the claims, shall we?

  • creates a naturally flawless complexion: Yes, I loved how it looked on my skin! It disappeared into my skin and looked great.
  •  medium to buildable coverageIt did a good job at making my skin look even, but I wouldn’t say it covered my imperfections
  • available in an expanded range of 40 shades: Yes, this is great!
  • doesn’t require touch ups: This is where I don’t agree. Although this product says it works for all skin types, and my skin is not oily in the winter, this product looked shiny on me within a few hours. It also rubbed off very quickly.

Maybe I need to set it with more powder? However, since I really do like how it looks, I have been mixing this with my matte foundations for a natural look.

Would I repurchase? Probably not.  Unfortunately, this was a let down for me!

Review: Prada Candy Eau de Parfum

While I love trying out new perfumes, I usually like scents that are woodsy or marine-like.  But once in a while, I like to try out something which is sweet and girly.  Perfume samples are a great way to do so, and I’m glad I got to try out the Prada Candy Eau de Parfum.

What it does: (from the Sephora website)

Prada Candy is a fragrance with a novel olfactory balance combining exceptionally high-quality ingredients in excessive proportions. Magnified by white musks, noble benzoin comes together with a modern caramel accord to give the fragrance a truly unique signature.

Key Notes: White Musks, Benzoin, Caramel Accord

Price: $68 for 1 fluid ounce

What I thought:

This is a sweet fragrance! I didn’t feel that it was very musky, but I definitely picked up on the caramel scents. Many of the online reviews commented that it smelled like baby powder, but I thought it smelled more like vanilla.  This fragrance reminds me of a girl on a romantic date – provided, of course, that her date also likes this scent!

Would I repurchase? No. I liked this scent well enough to use up the sample, but I don’t think I could handle and entire bottle. For sweet scents, I prefer the Dior Miss Dior, which combines fruity scents with the sweetness.

Review: Lush Yuzu and Cocoa shower gel

Long time readers of my blog know that I love Lush products. The problem is that I have tried most of their soaps and shower gels, and there are times when I can’t find anything new to try! Fortunately, I found the Lush Yuzu and Cocoa shower gel on my last trip.

Yuzu is a citrus fruit that is native to Japan. It is used often in Japanese food and sweets, and has a fragrance which is not sweet but not as sharp as lemon.  But combined with cocoa? Although orange and chocolate is a great combination, I’ve never had anything that combines yuzu and cocoa, so I was very interested to see what this would be like.

What it does: (from the Lush website)

Enough cocoa and tonka to make Mr Wonka wish he’d invented something half as sweet. Citrusy fresh yuzu juice is blended with reassuring cocoa and tonka absolutes for a shower that smells like chocolate oranges. You might not be able to lick it, but with a scent this sumptuous your comfort eating cravings are sure to be satiated.

Price: 9.95 GBP, 20.95 USD, 2000 JPY for 250g.

What I thought:

First, the scent… I loved it! Cocoa seems to take an edge off of the scent of yuzu, making it citrusy without being sharp. This definitely isn’t the scent of your household cleaners!

As with most Lush shower gels, this is very liquidy. I like to apply it to a wash cloth to use it, but I still felt that it did not lather very well that way. The best way to get lather is to apply it directly, and ensuring that it does not get diluted with water.

The color is a bit off putting, though – it is florescent yellow!

Would I repurchase? Maybe.  I liked the product well enough, but I felt like I was using a lot of it at once, and I used it up pretty quickly.

Hope you enjoyed this review!

Review: NYX Dark Circle Concealer

Yeah, I have dark circles under my eyes.   I have a hard time falling asleep daily and as a result, I usually haven’t had enough sleep.  As a result, I use concealer under my eyes regularly – in fact, my undereyes are the place where I use the most concealer!

I’ve tried a lot of different concealers to hide my dark circles, and I tend to gravitate towards ones with high coverage. I’ve tried color correctors before, most notably the famous Bobbi Brown one, but I didn’t find that they really erased my dark circles.

That being said, I really don’t know why I picked up the NYX Dark Circle Concealer in light. I don’t like concealers in pots and I swatched it but I didn’t feel that it was pigmented.  I’m glad that I did!

What it does: (from the NYX website)

A serious solution for one of beauty’s most challenging problems! No fancy names just a product that can be counted on to do the job. The product glides on without looking thick or obvious. The subtle hint of orange counteracts the appearance of dark circles while natural skin-toned pigments work in unison to provide the ultimate coverage.

Price: $6

What I thought:

I don’t get how this works! The product is very thin and spreads evenly.  It doesn’t seem to be very pigmented, but somehow it cancels my dark undereye area!  I like to use a small brush to apply it, and then I tap it with my fingers. This seems to be better than using a brush or sponge to blend it.

This was an unexpected find.  I’m so glad that I tried it!
