Review: Marc Anthony Dream Waves Beach Spray

Salt sprays are a must have product in my regiment, although they aren’t very well known in Japan. I first picked up the Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray many years ago after hearing the hype.  I didn’t really like it at the time, until I realized that I liked the way my hair looked after I had been scuba diving.  Since then, I’ve picked up different salt sprays each time I went to the US.  The Marc Anthony Dream Waves Beach Spray is the newest one on my list!

What it does: (from the Ulta website)

Create natural, effortless, beach hair worn loose, soft and wavy. It adds body and texture to straight, fine strands or pumps up the curl in already wavy hair. Add extra definition to your wavy layers. Hydrolyzed Silk and Provitamin B5 protect your tresses while adding moisture and shine. Powerful UV Protectors absorb ultraviolet light to save your mane from harmful sun exposure, dehydration and color-fade. You’re left with manageable, touchable waves. Even the straightest hair can achieve tousled beach hair any time of year.
Price: $8.99 for 4.2 oz.

What I thought:

My first thought when I used this product was, “ooooh, the smell!”  The product has a sweet coconut scent, which reminds me a lot of the beach.  It brought me right back to Hawaii!

However, I didn’t really like the product. It seemed to make my hair stickier and less manageable than other salt sprays. Maybe the bottle was spraying too much product on my hair? I thought I was using a similar amount as I do for other salt sprays, but still I didn’t like how my hair felt.

Would I repurchase?  No. If you are looking for a salt spray at an affordable price, I recommend the Not Your Mother’s Sea Salt Spray.

Review: Maybelline Fit Me Concealer

It seems that I am constantly on the search for a good concealer…  They all either don’t last, or wear off unevenly.  The Maybelline Fit Me Concealer was very popular last time I was in the US, so I picked it up!

What it does: (from Ulta’s website)
Maybelline Fit Me Concealer gives a flawless look that lets the real you come through. It’s makeup that doesn’t mess with you. No oils. No waxes. No nonsense.

Natural coverage that leaves skin the way it was meant to be: fresh, breathing, natural
Exclusive translucent base and lightweight pigments allow skin’s natural highs and lows to show through

Price:  Will vary, as with all American drugstore products.  Ulta lists this for $7

Availability: This and other Maybelline products are widely available in US drugstores and discount stores.

What I thought:

First of all, I really liked the applicator! The doe foot applicator is small and stiff, allowing me to put a small amount of product exactly where I want it.

This product also blended well and looked natural on the skin.  I thought it worked well for my undereye circles and other  large areas that I wanted to cover.  On the other hand, I thought the finish was too natural to cover my blemishes and sunspots.

This product comes in only 6 shades, and I have the shade 20 Sand which worked well for me. I hope Maybelline comes out with different undertones in the future!

Would I repurchase? Maybe. I liked the product, but I’m still searching for something with more coverage!

Review: Daiso Eyeliner Coat

I like wearing brown eyeliner on my lower lash line, but I found that it never lasts. Even if I use an eyeliner which is supposed to stay in place all day, I would get smudges under my eyes.  I found something called an eyeliner coat, and it has become one of the must haves in my makeup routine!

What it does:

The applicator looks like a liquid eyeliner pen, and I use it to paint over my eyeliner.

Price: 100 JPY, about $1

Availability:  This product is available in Daiso stores. Daiso is one of the most popular 100 yen chains in Japan.

What I thought:  I really like using this product! It is the only way I can get my lower eyeliner to stay!!  One drawback is that this product stings if it gets too close to my eyes, so I don’t use it for my waterline.

Would I repurchase?  Yes, it is one of my must have products!

Review: NARS Pro-Prime Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base

Eyeshadow primer is one type of product which I really cannot find in Japan. I always stock up when I am in the US.  I like UDPP, and my drugstore go-to is the Milani eyeshadow primer.  I got a sample of the NARS Pro-Prime Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base, and I was really excited to try it.

What it does: (from the Sephora website)

A lightweight primer that creates a seamless canvas that keeps cream and powder eye color looking brilliant, fresh, and just-applied all day. This smudge-proof eyeshadow base uses a unique polymer and mineral powder blend to get a firm grip on color for long-lasting, gorgeous wear. Fortified with a special deep-sea extract and an antioxidant rice extract, it dries on contact and keeps the delicate eye lid smooth and ready for eyeshadow application.

Price: $26 for 7ml.  By comparison, the Urban Decay Primer Potion is $20 for 10ml

Availability: NARS is available at Sephora and select department stores in the US.

What I thought:

When I first touched the tube, I thought it was very similar to other NARS products with a rough silicone finish. I was concerned that it would get pretty dirty quickly, and I was right!

I opened the top to find a small doe foot applicator. It is very stiff, and effective in applying a tiny bit of primer to my eyelids.

The product is smooth and did not leave any kind of residue on my skin. I was pleasantly surprised to see how well the primer worked to keep my eyeshadow in place, even in the summer.

Would I repurchase? Yes, I thought this worked very well!

Review: L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte Foundation

The last time I was in the US, the L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte Foundation was extremely hyped up on Youtube.  “It’s a matte foundation from the drugstore!  It’s full coverage!” etc…

Did I really need another foundation? Obviously not, especially since I love the Estee Lauder Double Wear and I’m not going to run out of it any time soon.  But hey… I had to check out American products while I could get my hands on them!

What it does: (from the Ulta website)

For the 1st time, a super gliding mattifying formula with a high water content for maximum comfort that lasts. Contains Shine Defy Blotting Spheres that act like blotting paper to mimic makeup artist gesture, instantly absorbing sweat and oil without disturbing color pigments. Medium coverage.

Price: Ulta lists this product for $13 for 1 oz.  Drugstore foundations are getting pretty pricey!

Availability: L’Oreal products are widely available at US drugstores. I had no problems finding this.

What I thought:

First off, I really like the packaging.  Many people gripe about how drugstore foundations come in glass bottles without pumps, which dispense too much product at once. These squeeze tubes are the perfect solution, and they are probably cheaper to produce than pumps.  I especially like this kind of packaging for travel because they are lighter than glass bottles.

This product was extremely cakey on my skin. I like matte foundations, but this seemed to be too matte, even in warm weather.  It looked too fake to apply on my skin.

I decided to mix it with the MUFE Ultra HD foundation, which made my skin look too shiny.  Score! The mix of the two foundations worked perfectly on my skin, giving it a natural finish and lasting well!

Would I repurchase? Maybe.  I still think the Estee Lauder Double Wear is a better foundation if you need full coverage, and this was too matte for me. However, it is a great option for matte foundations from the drugstore!
