Review: NARS Satin Lip Pencil in Rikugien and Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Cruella

When I was in Hawaii this past February, I picked up the 2015 Sephora birthday gift. This year’s birthday gift is the NARS One Year Bolder duo, containing two chubby lip crayons – the NARS Satin Lip Pencil in Rikugien, and Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Cruella.

The annual birthday gift is available for Beauty Insiders, which means you have a point card at Sephora.  The card is free to make and available as a Passbook card on my iPhone (which means I don’t loose it).  The best part to being a Sephora Beauty Insider as someone who doesn’t shop at Sephora frequently is that the Beauty Insider card records your previous purchases, so I know what shade of foundation I liked previously!
What it does: (from the Sephora website)

(Satin Lip Pencil) The Satin Lip Pencil dresses up lips in statement shades that seduce with rich, color-bright pigments, while drenching them in decadent moisture. This modern, long-wearing, vitamin-enriched formula for lips looks sumptuously saturated and dramatically defined.

(Velvet Matte Lip Pencil) Combining the convenience of a pencil with the application of a lipstick in a jumbo-sized crayon design, these pigment-rich sticks provide a matte, creamy finish that will not dry the lips. Enriched with emollients, vitamin E, and silicone, each gorgeous shade glides on and stays put.

Price: both are $26 for the full sized products

Availability: NARS products are available at Sephora, department stores, and NARS boutiques. A full list is available on the NARS website.

Rikugien on the left, Cruella on the right.

Cruella is matte, cool-toned red. Rikugien is a cool-toned rose pink, which is actually more pigmented than the picture below.

  • I don’t usually like matte lipsticks or red lipsticks, but Cruella was more comfortable to wear than other matte lipsticks.
  • Cruella is very pigmented!
  • Rikugien was very comfortable to wear.

  • I still don’t really like cool-toned reds on me, but this is a personal preference.
  • I found I went through Rikugien quite quickly!

Would I repurchase? Yes for the Satin lip pencils.  I’m interested to find a My Lips But Better shade! If you like matte lipsticks, I would recommend the Velvet Matte lip pencils, but I personally don’t like how matte lipsticks feel on my lips!

Hope you enjoyed this review, and that you pick up the Sephora annual birthday gift!

xoxo, K
